In June 2020, the Sandusky State Theatre suffered catastrophic damage when a severe windstorm tore off the roof, causing the auditorium ceiling to collapse and destroying the stage, seating, and many irreplaceable historic architectural elements. The devastation sparked a community-wide effort to raise funds and rebuild this iconic cultural landmark.
Janotta & Herner was selected in 2022 as a partner to help bring the theatre back to life. Our team executed several bid packages for the reconstruction, including demolition, new foundations, and the fabrication and erection of the structural steel package.
The steel erection phase was especially complex. Working within a tight downtown environment, we erected the 75-foot building, including an 85-foot-long truss spanning over the stage. Execution required precision planning and multiple high-risk, heavy picks using a 165-ton crane—all performed safely and efficiently to support the theatre’s return as a premier community venue as an AISC-certified fabricator in Ohio.
Janotta & Herner is proud to be part of restoring the Sandusky State Theatre and preserving its legacy for generations to come.
